The Challenge
While Matrix had embedded responsible sourcing practices since its inception , the team recognised that sustainability needed to be approached more holistically. With B Corp certification already achieved, with a score of 94.7, they saw an opportunity to go further, aligning internal teams around a shared long-term vision for positive environmental and social impact.
Matrix needed a formal sustainability strategy that would build on existing strengths, complement their B Corp work, and provide a clear, actionable roadmap to guide future efforts. In addition to strategic support, they needed additional capacity to help implement key sustainability initiatives and ensure they had the right expertise in place to maintain momentum.
The Solution
We began by conducting a thorough materiality assessment, engaging both internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers and customers, to identify the issues that mattered most across operations and the wider value chain. Combined with a deep dive into Matrix’s broader corporate strategy and existing sustainability activities, these insights laid the foundation for a group-wide impact strategy, structured around three key pillars: People, Planet, and Product.
Under each pillar, we worked closely with the relevant teams to develop meaningful short- and long-term goals, backed by clear actions and ESG targets. We also helped identify areas where key data was missing or systems needed improvement, supporting the setup of appropriate data collection processes and working to upskill internal teams. As part of our implementation support, we led the development of Matrix’s carbon reduction plan and supported the development of their Modern Slavery Statements.
Our partnership with Matrix has continued beyond the strategy development phase. We support the business with ongoing reporting and sustainability communications, including their annual impact report, and assist in articulating their progress to customers and stakeholders. To further embed sustainability across the group, we have also run internal engagement initiatives, including quarterly forums to share progress and challenges, and ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions to strengthen employee understanding and ownership of sustainability topics.
The Results
Matrix now has a clear, strategic approach to sustainability that aligns with its values and commercial goals. The strategy has brought teams together around a shared vision, supported by targeted upskilling and regular engagement to build momentum and keep sustainability front of mind.
B·ABLE has helped embed the strategy across the business, strengthen internal capability, and ensure consistent, credible impact reporting. Sustainability is now a core part of how Matrix operates, guiding decision-making and driving long-term positive impact across the group.
